The largest city in Northern
Luzon, Laoag is located in Ilocos Norte. The city's name was
taken from the Ilocano word "light". The name originated
from Spanish times as the closely packed village, that was
situated in the north bank of the Laoag River, would shine
like a beacon in the night for river travelers to see Laoag
was a busy trading port where Chinese and Japanese traders
came to do business even before the arrival of the Spanish.
Spanish colonizers occupied it in 1580.
Augustinian missionaries also established a parish dedicated
to 'St. William the Hermit' in the same year led by Juan de Salceda. Modern day Laoag is now famous for being the old
ancestral home province of former President Ferdinand Marcos
Vigan
In pre-colonial times, Vigan
was an important trading post for Chinese junk, trading gold
beeswax and other products from the Central Cordilleras for
exotic Asia goods. Many Chinese traders settled in the
meztizo district, marrying locals and starting new
bloodlines. Vigan was captured and settled by the Spaniards
in 1572, and grew to become a centre of Spanish political
and religious power in the north of Luzon. In 1758 Vigan
Diocese became the seat of the of Nueva Segovia. Local legend
has is that Vigan got its name from a simple communication
breakdown. A Spaniard walking along the Meztizo river
apparently met a local and asked which the city's name. Not
understanding what he was being asked, but seeing that the
Spaniard seemed to be pointing to a tree, replied "bigaa apo"
(a giant Taro plant that was common in the area) It is from
the word "Bigaa" that Vigan is said to have derived its name.

Pagudpud Beaches
Pagudpud…. That according to
the elders is a deep Ilocano word which means soft sandy
soil "kuppuoy" a kadaratan. The residents are pure Ilocanos.
There is still a few of the cultural minorities of the Apayao origin residing in remote sitios. However, they are
already christened into the Christian religions. Their places are made accessible by feeder roads,
bridging them closer to the civilized world, filling the gap
of their uncivilized world. Bicolanos, Visayanos, Igorots
and others who migrated here are indulged in logging and
fishing activities.
BURGOS ECO TOUR (4th
day) with Lunch
Kaangrian Falls
Kapurpurawan Rock
Formation
Kaangrian Falls
Kaangrian Falls is
located in Barangay Paaya, a 5-kilometer drive from
the National Highway to the head of the trail. From
there is a 4-kilometer hike to the falls. The first
20 minutes of the trail is out in the open and quite
hot, so remember to bring a hot. The locals bring
their cattle, caribou horses and other animals to
grace in these open fields. This treeless area
provides a nice view of the surrounding hills,
limestone outrcroppings and the area of the hike.
When you settle down into the shade cover, you will
be grateful for the coolness. Along the trail you
can search for signs of hoof prints of small deer or
identify many types of plant life, including many
varieties of wild mushroom. The waterfalls at
Caangrian are every where, creating a semi-circle of
water cascading down multiple layers of rock. The
beauty of the area was created by limestone deposits
which have created hundreds of small sparkling pools
around the base of the falls.
Kapurpurawan Rock
Formation
Kapurpurawan Rock
Formation which means "white rock". After just one
visit, this place will stand out in your mind as a
natural wonder. It is a massive rock that juts out
into a sea. From afar, it looks like as if someone
has wiped off the top layer frosting and exposed the
cake that lies beneath. Up close, it is a dazzling
bright white rock that sparkles in the sun.
Kapurpurawan is a showcase for the power of wind and
water on rock and coral. Amazing!
